What is the difference between TUSC365 day camp versus overnight camp options?
Both of our camp sessions will have all of the same Ultimate-based activities. All campers will participate in the same skills and drills and camp-wide games and tournaments, and they’ll be grouped with other players their age. However, day-campers won’t have breakfast or dinner at camp, and they will not participate in the “evening activities” (which may include things like jersey swaps, panel discussions with adult Ultimate players, talent shows, yard games, a player vs. coaches game, a local player showcase game, movie night, etc.). For many players, the overnight option enhances their connection to the Ultimate community and to the camp in general, and for others it’s an essential opportunity because they live outside of Austin (or even outside of Texas!). For some players, the day-camp option is sufficient because they live nearby and their focus is primarily on field time. Both options are a lot of fun and provide opportunities for growth, community-building, and fun.

What is the TUSC Elite program at camp?

The TUSC Elite division runs at the same time and in the same place as our premier camp programming. The pricing is also the same. The difference is that campers who are accepted to the Elite program will receive unique, competitive, high-level curriculum and coaching, specifically designed for players who intend to elevate their game and play beyond high school. We select our coaches for the Elite Division based on their experience working with high-level ultimate teams, players, and programs. The Elite Division is also limited to players with high school level experience — specifically rising 10th, 11th, and 12th graders. There will be overlap during unstructured time (such as meals, swimming, evening activities, rec time, etc.), and we may combine groups for games to ensure sufficient numbers at certain times. But for the most part, Elite campers will participate in drills and games in a separate group from the rest of camp.

I'd like to be considered for the TUSC Elite program. How do I apply?

Go through the registration process for TUSC365 Summer Camp and select “yes” when prompted about the Elite Division option. The TUSC365 Team will send you a google form application with more information and clarity regarding deadlines. Coach Kepner will notify you about your acceptance status as soon as possible, but you can also email tusculti@gmail.com for an update on your status at any time.

Are middle school students allowed to choose the overnight option at TUSC365 Summer Camp?
Yes! The overnight option is open to campers age 12-18 (which includes middle school age players). Roommate assignments will be determined primarily by grade-level. If you’re younger than 12 but eager to register for the overnight option, email tusculti@gmail.com to discuss whether this opportunity feels right for you. We are happy to discuss unique circumstances and accommodate specific requests when appropriate!

Can you describe the daily schedule of activities at TUSC365 Summer Camp?

My child will have to miss part of camp. Is that a problem?

_MG_0379.jpg

We know that kids and families are busy, and we aim to accommodate your unique needs and schedules. If a camper has to miss part of camp, or requires a late drop-off / early pick-up, we ask that parents/guardians notify us ahead of time and facilitate the transportation and that the player lets us know when they’re leaving so that we can ensure that everyone is safe and accounted for!

What will we need to bring to camp?
We’ll provide a complete list of camp essentials prior to the start of camp, but the basics include cleats (or good athletic shoes), athletic shorts, a WHITE and a DARK jersey/shirt, water bottle, change of socks, sunscreen, towel and bathing suit. Overnight campers will require multiple of these items, as well as bedding / sheets and toiletries.

Is water provided?
We will have ice water at the fields — thankfully provided by our outstanding athletic trainers! — but we also recommend that players attend every field session with a FULL water bottle to begin. We also encourage campers to drink water throughout the day, even when we aren’t playing, in order to stay hydrated all week long. We also provide Gatorade / electrolytes at camp to off-set the effects of the heat.

Who will be supervising/coaching the campers?
Our staff is comprised of experienced Ultimate players with teaching and coaching experience. The staff includes college, club, and professional players – many of whom were once youth players in the Austin area – and many of whom are also certified teachers, coaches, and educators. All staff members have completed background checks, TUSC-specific training and supervision, and SafeSport certification.

Is there medical care available at camp?
There will be an athletic trainer available on campus to tend to any player injuries and concerns. We also have access to the outstanding St. Stephen’s athletic training room (which includes ice, medical supplies and materials, and more).

Is this camp suitable for beginner / intermediate / advanced level players?
Yes! We will group players by age and experience level, covering the basics for newer players and pushing experienced players to expand their game. This is a sports-specific camp, so we will include the basics as well as more advanced skills, and we encourage both new and experienced players to prepare themselves accordingly. High school players will be divided into Intermediate and Elite groups by age and experience. However, we do still recommend that high school age enter camp with some level of Ultimate experience, or at least experience in competitive athletics to ensure safety and proper preparation.

Will the cafeteria be able to meet my dietary needs / restrictions?
The St. Stephen’s cafeteria is fully prepared to meet all manner of dietary needs, allergies, and restrictions. Please contact us ahead of time to explain your specific needs, and ensure that the camper is able to articulate his/her restrictions effectively.

What do we do when we aren’t playing Ultimate?
We spend our non-Ultimate time at camp on a range of activities, including unstructured “play” (ping pong, pool, yard games, board games, etc.), movies, jersey swaps, discussions and mentoring with adult Ultimate players, ice cream and pizza parties, and more! In some cases, down-time will include viewing and evaluating film of on-field play, discussing strategy and plays, and other Ultimate-specific discussions. But after hours of playing Ultimate in the Texas heat, campers are often ready for some relaxation in the air-conditioning, so we make sure to have that time available to them as well.

What should I expect in terms of fitness and activity level?
As a sports camp, TUSC will challenge players to run and play hard. You'll definitely be tired at the end of the day! It’s essential that players get sufficient rest and hydration in order to play as much as they’d like when we’re on the field. Generally-speaking, the level of competition increases with age.

It’s hot in Texas! How will we ensure that campers are well hydrated and safe?
Our coaches, athletic trainer, and nurse are familiar with the signs of dehydration and heat exhaustion and we discuss this with our campers throughout camp. We are conscientious about shade, water availability, and frequent break times. We also encourage campers to be aware of their own physical state, communicating with us when they aren’t feeling well or need a break for water or from the sun and keeping a water bottle close by at all times. While we do play LOTS of Ultimate, we also try to intersperse “play” time with chalk talks and other built-in recovery time.

Will I be responsible for a key or key deposit if I’m an overnight camper?

No! Overnight campers will not have a key to their rooms. Campers will be split up by gender (boys and girls will *never* be on the same floor), and the directors will be responsible for access to the dormitories. With that in mind, we recommend that campers leave valuables at-home and/or secure.

If I travel by plane, which airport should I use?
The closest airport is Austin-Bergstrom, which is roughly 30-45 minutes from St. Stephen’s. Contact us at tusculti@gmail.com with other questions about travel.

Is transportation provided?
We do not provide transportation to and from camp, but feel free to contact us if you need guidance or advice in how to access rides and/or carpools. Please note that we do not have any off-campus travel or activities planned, so campers will always remain at St. Stephen’s when they’re under our supervision (unless previously communicated with the directors).

Frequently Asked Questions: TUSC365 Year-Round Programming

What are TUSC365 Elementary School Pick-up Days?

Our Elementary School Pick-up Days typically run alongside our other programs, such as TUSC365 Spring League, TUSC365 Fall Tournament, etc. The purpose of these events is to provide a low-stakes, fun, community-building introduction to the sport for our youngest players. We prioritize lots of games, approachable instruction, playing and scrimmaging, and engagement with our elementary-age coaching specialists. For some, this is a great way to try out ultimate while their older siblings have their own games. For others, this gives them a chance to learn and play with other kids their age.
